Legal counsel in the markets and post-trading unit

WHERE WILL YOU BE WORKING? 

The markets and post-trading unit of the FSMA monitors compliance with the rules that ensure the proper functioning, integrity, and transparency of the markets in financial instruments. In particular, it supervises market operators and post-trading institutions, like central securities depositories. The unit ensures high-quality market reporting in order to exercise the aforementioned powers efficiently and effectively. 

Together with the other employees of the unit, you will be responsible for the supervision of regulated markets, multilateral trading facilities, systematic internalisers, and designated publishing entities. You will also monitor market evolutions (e.g. algorithmic trading, direct electronic access, etc.) and monitor on the proper pre- and post-trade transparency requirements for trading venues and investment firms. 

WHAT WILL YOUR JOB ENTAIL?

As a legal advisor, you will work in collaboration with other legal advisors and economists in the markets and post-trading unit. You will also represent the FSMA at standing committees and working groups of the European market regulators, ESMA, such as the Secondary Markets Working Group. 

WHAT DO YOU BRING?

  • A Master’s degree in Law (additional financial specialization is an important asset)
  • Preferably several years as a legal council specialized in financial law or corporate law, auditor, risk manager, or compliance officer in a financial institutions (or any other similar professional experience). 
  • The capability to analyze qualitative information as well as to interpret quantitative information and dashboards.
  • A strong interest in financial markets.
  • A pro-active approach, strong analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage contacts and negotiations with companies under supervision and to cooperate with foreign market authorities
  • Ability to communicate clearly on technical issues in Dutch, French, and English.
  • Both a team player and able to work independently.
  • Your strengths include eagerness to learn and solution-oriented thinking.
  • Good knowledge of the commonly used Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.). Knowledge of Power BI is an asset. 
  • Commitment to the tasks of general interest with which the FSMA is entrusted.
