Cryptocurrencies: the chairman of the FSMA, Jean-Paul Servais, explains cryptocurrencies during a hearing in the Senate

The Chairman of the FSMA, Jean-Paul Servais, provided information on cryptocurrencies during a Senate hearing. The hearing took place before the Committee on Cross-cutting Issues following the tabling of a proposal for a resolution aimed at establishing a legal framework for the sale, purchase and use of virtual currencies and all related financial products.

In his presentation, the Chairman gave explanations on the characteristics of cryptocurrencies, on the European and international initiatives in this area, on the regulatory context and on the combating of investment fraud. Representatives of the National Bank of Belgium and of the Belgian Financial Intelligence Processing Unit (CTIF-CFI) also took part in the hearing.
