Campaign against online fraud

Press release
Warning: an inverted triangle with exclamation mark

The Deputy prime minster and minister of Employment, Economy and Consumer Affairs, Kris Peeters, has launched a major awareness campaign to combat online fraud. The campaign features the slogan: 'If it’s too good to be true, it probably is'.

The first stage of the campaign focuses on fraud involving cryptocurrencies. Later in the year, other stages will address online investment fraud and ‘friendship scams’.

The FSMA is playing an active role in the campaign, in collaboration with the FPS Economy and the Minister’s office.

For several months, the number of reports of cryptocurrency scams and of other forms of online fraud has been increasing. The campaign is aimed at encouraging victims to come forward so that crooks may be unmasked and the number of people who fall for their scams thereby reduced. Under this initiative, specific tips are offered to help avoid such fraud.
